About Madeline

Madeline Young is an abstract artist based in Orange, whose intuitive paintings explore emotion, memory and the changing rhythms of the Australian landscape. Since 2014, she has also been Curator and Director of The Corner Store Gallery, supporting and showcasing emerging contemporary artists.

About the Artwork - Inspired by Tonic Restaurant

I was thrilled to be paired with Tony from Tonic for this project. My first idea was to paint an abstract portrait of Tony, but that changed the day I visited Tonic to talk it through. Like my own gallery, Tonic is housed in an old corner store, and I was struck by how alike our two buildings are. Both have beautiful old windows that frame a panoramic view of the neighbourhood outside. That felt like the real connection between us, so instead of painting Tony, I painted the view Tony sees all day.
